Here’s why we got another LEGO Star Wars Yoda’s Jedi Starfighter in 2023

The LEGO Star Wars designers have explained why they chose to revisit Yoda’s Jedi Starfighter for this year’s summer wave, and it all comes down to one surprisingly simple reason.

LEGO and Jedi Starfighters go together like bread and butter, salt and pepper or LEGO Star Wars fans and complaints about new Clone Trooper minifigures, so it was no surprise to see another one among the summer 2023 line-up, hot on the heels of last year’s 75333 Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Jedi Starfighter. What was more surprising was the particular Jedi the new ship belongs to.

75360 Yoda’s Jedi Starfighter is the second version of the wizened green master’s personal transport to arrive on shelves, and the original iteration is only six years old. To receive an updated model so soon after the last one – while other Jedi have much older sets, or have never received their own LEGO starfighter at all – caught many LEGO Star Wars fans by surprise. But the design team says there was one obvious reason for bringing the set to shelves.

“First of all, I want to say that it's probably not the last Jedi Starfighter you’ll see from us,” LEGO Star Wars Creative Lead Jens Kronvold Frederiksen tells Brick Fanatics and other LEGO Fan Media. “Without promising anything, that's just a fact. But we [chose] Yoda’s starfighter because of the huge popularity of that character. Besides his Dagobah home, that is really the thing you can associate him with. And it's a cool little fighter.”

“Yoda is an extremely popular character with kids,” adds graphic designer Madison O’Neil. Yoda is now available in three different sets: 75358 Tenoo Jedi Temple (a 4+ set based on the Disney+ animated series Young Jedi Adventures), 75330 Dagobah Jedi Training Diorama (an 18+ set on the brink of retirement) and 75360 Yoda’s Jedi Starfighter. The newest set effectively bridges the gap between the two others, offering an affordable way to add the character to your collection.

As much as the set is effectively a vehicle to sell Yoda, though, it also comes with 253 bricks for Yoda’s vehicle. (Are you still with us?) The newest version of the diminutive starfighter is similar in many ways to the original set, 2017’s 75168 Yoda’s Jedi Starfighter – it’s the same ship, after all, and we’re only six years on from that one – but has just enough design differences to make the build a fresh experience.

“We [went] into looking into what could be improved,” Jens says, explaining how the team first approached the design of the new set. “There actually wasn't a lot of feedback about problems [from the last model], but we took fresh eyes on it. And then again we have new elements, new opportunities. So most often we start from scratch again.”
