A retired LEGO Icons set sparked the idea for the upcoming 10355 Blacktron Renegade, according to insight from the set's designer.
The designer of 10335 Blacktron Renegade, Jae Won Lee, revealed that part of the reason why 6954 Renegade was selected as the LEGO Group's latest nostalgic LEGO Icons set was to provide some opposition to the now-retired 10497 Galaxy Explorer. Speaking to LEGO YouTuber Tiago Catarino, Jae explained how the theme's return to classic space 'needed a villain.'
"The Blacktron Renegade was quite popular at the time," explained Jae. "It's a very playable set because it has six modulars. It's quite an innovative system and makes for a fun concept for the new one.
"You already have 10497 Galaxy Explorer and we need a villain to go with it."

Bad news if you didn't pick up 10497 Galaxy Explorer while it was here as it was now retired but a fun sign that the LEGO Group appears to be planning a gradual return to various points of classic LEGO Space. Could we see the LEGO Group also slowly make a return to other retro factions, like Futuron, Space Police, or M-Tron?
That remains to be seen but, for now, those who already have 10497 Galaxy Explorer can once again act out space battles when 10355 Blacktron Renegade comes out on January 1. LEGO Insiders will be able to pick up the set from January 1, ahead of a wider release on January 4, with the LEGO Icons set retailing for £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99.
