Upgrade your LEGO Castle minifigures with Pick a Brick

LEGO 10305 Lion Knights' Castle may be sold out, but you can easily upgrade its minifigures with a handful of elements from Pick a Brick now.

After the last copies of 10305 Lion Knights' Castle sold out over the LEGO Insiders Weekend, thanks in no small part to a considerable discount, some of the set's exclusive minifigure parts can still be acquired over on Pick a Brick. After our first feature, going over these elements with the parts lists and downloadable files to quickly add them to your basket, we're back with some useful upgrades for those retiring LEGO Castle minifigures you can pick up right now. Don't wait too long, though, as stock is running dry ahead of these pieces' retirement.

From a bow that doesn't have to come pre-loaded with an arrow to utilising an element from another recent Castle creation for some royal guards, read on for the upgrades you can pick up on Pick a Brick without breaking the bank

Brick-built bows and an alternate archer uniform

The archers in 10305 Lion Knights' Castle are equipped with metal helmets, making them closely resemble the standard soldiers and knights of the Lion Knights faction. Since these units won't be getting within melee range, a big helmet blocking their peripheral vision is likely to be more of a hindrance, but our first easy upgrade will solve that.

Using the archer hat element instead of the metal helmet opens up these minifigures' field of view and gives them a different look from the melee soldiers. The element in blue works for the Black Falcons and Lion Knights, and you can use differently-sized feathers to identify the leader of that archer unit. With the uniform upgraded, that just leave one important aspect of these minifigures to consider – the weapon

Existing LEGO bow pieces come pre-loaded with an arrow already pulled back, which can look awkward in displays where minifigures are standing still, not firing the bow. In the context of toys, this aspect of the element makes sense, helping provide your imagination with a foundation to work off during play. That won't stop us from upgrading the bow for non-combat poses, and our design can be used for combat scenes, as well.

By using a standard lightsaber shaft piece in varying colours for different factions and two horn pieces, it creates a convincing undrawn bow for minifigures to hold neutrally, without there being an arrow loaded, but defying the laws of LEGO physics. These three pieces significantly change the look of LEGO archers, and the bow isn't too big to be a visual distraction, either.

Add to that a wand element, and you have an arrow ready to be fired off towards the enemy. These parts won't cost you much, and can all be found on Pick a Brick now.

Royal guards

Whether you have a king or queen leading the Lion Knights of 10305 Lion Knights' Castle, they'll need some special protection, and we can use a piece from 10332 Medieval Town Square to create units that look ready for this task.

While 10305 Lion Knights' Castle has several varieties of shields, none look quite as grand and regal as the tower shield from 10332 Medieval Town Square. You can grab this element from the retired set now on Pick a Brick to equip a couple of knights with special equipment to guard the king or queen.

We opted for the kettle helmet element for the photo above, but there's no bad helmet piece to pick from. You can find a selection of parts to make these minifigures for yourself, or upgrade existing ones, in the table below.

A king for the queen, and extra banners to boot

The official minifigure selection in 10305 Lion Knights' Castle includes a queen to lead the faction, but you can quite easily add a king to the mix using parts on Pick a Brick. We've outlined the parts you can use to make a king for yourself in the following table, and note that CAPE, NO. 64 is more expensive because it comes in a pack with the set's two fabric flags, as well.

You can use one of these flags with a horse and barding to create a steed for your king to ride, alongside the queen on the horse that already comes in 10305 Lion Knights' Castle.

A leader for the Black Falcons

Speaking of leaders, the Black Falcons in 10305 Lion Knights' Castle don't have a leader that is quite as visually imposing as that of the queen, but you can amend this with four extra elements. Add some bulky armour and a visor-laden helmet with a black feather, and you'll have a leader worthy of the Black Falcons' name.
