It's time for the next generation of LEGO NINJAGO City

The next generation of LEGO NINJAGO City may have already started in light of the most recent rumour, offering fresh fans a more affordable build.

Following the soft reboot of the animated series with the Dragons Rising TV show, NINJAGO has undoubtedly started its next generation in the last couple of years. It's consequently been targeting and bringing in a refreshed audience to the world of the long-running theme.

With its 15th anniversary in 2026 looming, rumour has it that we'll be seeing another addition to the NINJAGO City collection in just a couple of months and it's the perfect time to start a new generation of this modular range too with the current series now in its third year.

The first NINJAGO City set was released in 2017 based on the NINJAGO movie with the next following in 2018. After an extended break, the collection continued in 2021 and 2023 outside of the movie. That leaves a seven-year gap since this collection started and aside from 70657 NINJAGO City Docks, the range's models have only been getting bigger and more expensive.

By contrast, 71837 NINJAGO City Workshops is rumoured to be $249.99 with 3,244 pieces. That's half the size of 71799 NINJAGO City Markets and accordingly, the 2025 model is rumoured to only take up one baseplate while the market build is spread over two. For a wider comparison, 71837 NINJAGO City Workshops is said to be the second-least expensive set in the collection and the first with only one baseplate since 70620 NINJAGO City.

While it might be disappointing to hear that NINJAGO City is aiming for a smaller build following 71799 NINJAGO City Markets, it makes perfect sense with the 2023 model being the only one currently available, and currently retiring in 2026.

By offering a smaller set that takes up much less space like the collection had when it started seven years ago, it allows the new generation of NINJAGO fans to start their own city with a (relatively) more affordable model and expand it with 71799 NINJAGO City Markets later on before it retires.

Considering that both the markets and workshops are confirmed or rumoured to be Dragons Rising models with characters from the current series too, we're seemingly entering the next generation of NINJAGO City with the most affordable entry point since 2018. Looking at 71799 NINJAGO City Markets, it seems likely that whatever comes next will continue to be compatible with the older sets and still appeal to older enthusiasts too.

Take the rumour of 71837 NINJAGO City Workshops with a pinch of salt for now since the set is far from confirmed and click here to see what else is rumoured for LEGO NINJAGO this year.
