Rumoured LEGO Batman Arkham Asylum should look to the past

Rumoured LEGO Batman Arkham Asylum should look to the past

A rumoured LEGO Batman Arkham Asylum model believed to be released next year would benefit by looking to LEGO DC's past for improvements.

Not including much smaller models, there have been three LEGO Arkham Asylum sets released in 2006, 2013 and 2017 for the original Batman theme, LEGO DC and The LEGO Batman Movie respectively. The three models are undoubtedly different with varied minifigures, features and builds that make them all stand out.

Now, a new LEGO DC Arkham Asylum set is rumoured for next year from a reliable source and while everything you read that has not been announced should be taken with caution, word of such a set is exciting. Looking at the three sets released previously, each of them has something unique about them that would be fantastic to see in an ultimate $400 Arkham Asylum set.

Here are some improvements, upgrades and unique LEGO Arkham Asylum features the rumoured set would benefit from featuring or being inspired by.

Uncommon heroes

Following another minifigure-centric suggestion from earlier today, Arkham Asylum sets have been a surprisingly good source of less common LEGO DC heroes. While Green Lantern, Superman and more have never graced the asylum in LEGO, Nightwing and Robin have in the 2006 and 2013 sets respectively.

Nightwing and Robin have both been missing from LEGO DC since 2020 as the theme has been focused solely on Batman for the past four years. Now, with that rumoured to be changing, we can only hope that a massive $400 set would be the chance to bring them both back to the theme.

Daily life at Arkham Asylum

The recent 2017 LEGO Arkham Asylum set is the most organised and realistic of the three models, despite being in the outlandish landscape of The LEGO Batman movie. The way the model depicted daily life at the asylum with no way for patients to escape beyond the front door is an inspired choice by the designers.

It's a design decision that would be a good fit for another LEGO Arkham Asylum set, especially one with such modular potential. The likes of laundry, a cafeteria, a visitation area and even rooms for staff to keep an eye on everything should all feature in a new LEGO Arkham Asylum. Especially now that the Batman team have given us a taste of them in 70912 Arkham Asylum.

Harleen Quinzel

70912 Arkham Asylum is arguably the most detailed LEGO Arkham Asylum model yet and it also provided us with the first minifigure of Harleen Quinzel based on the film.

While we already named some villains we'd like to see in the rumoured 2025 set earlier today, Harleen plays an important role in the Joker's backstory before she became Harley Quinn and another chance to pick up this character would be greatly appreciated given her ties to Arkham Asylum.

Modular components

Sticking to 70912 Arkham Asylum once more, the 2017 model is densely packed inside but a lot of the accessories including sections of the cafeteria and security are designed to be removed from the model. This is likely intended for play but it also makes it easier to pose minifigures inside the set without knocking anything over.

A new Arkham Asylum model would do well to take a page out of 70912 Arkham Asylum's book in this regard, especially should it be packed with Easter eggs to appreciate similar to the Marvel modular buildings.

Transportation

While 70912 Arkham Asylum didn't stick to the tradition of including a transport van, both 7785 Arkham Asylum and 10937 Batman: Arkham Asylum Breakout include vans to transport patients to and from the asylum as required.

It's an important aspect of worldbuilding in these sets and a relatively simple and inexpensive inclusion that greatly adds to their lore and aesthetic. It similarly allows you to take a break from the large buildings too, improving the construction process accordingly.

Inventive escapes

While there are many features from Arkham Asylum LEGO sets that a new model would benefit from returning to, LEGO City has something worth noting as well. 60419 Police Prison Island is the most recent take on a prison island in LEGO City and it focuses heavily on play features with multiple ways to escape the island.

Given how the likes of the Joker, Poison Ivy and many more consistently return to fight Batman, surely they have some methods of escaping Arkham Asylum. Much of the official sets have eschewed any such escape plans aside from a bed sheet rope in 7785 Arkham Asylum. Should there be a LEGO Arkham Asylum planned for 2025, we can only hope that some inventive escape methods will be integrated into the set similar to 60419 Police Prison Island.
