A potted history of LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean

A potted history of LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean is back after nearly eight years, but the partnership first set sail long before that with a theme, game and more.

The new LEGO Black Pearl set is just the latest in a long line of LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean sets, forming part of a collection that stretches back 14 years, including everything from a battle pack to a video game.

While we wait for 10365 Captain Jack Sparrow's Pirate Ship to sail to shelves, here’s your comprehensive guide to everything LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean over the last 14 years.

2011 – A new theme sets sail, alongside a dedicated LEGO game

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean shares at least one detail with NINJAGO: their starting year. The Disney pirate theme began in 2011. It was based on three of the first four films – 2003’s The Curse of the Black Pearl, 2006’s Dead Man’s Chest, and 2011’s On Stranger Tides, released just two months before the theme began in July. The franchise is, in turn, inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean Disneyland attraction.

LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean started with a suite of accessories, four polybags, and nine sets (including the first LEGO Black Pearl). These didn’t just cover pirate ships, but also fountains, houses and cannibals.

That’s not to mention the LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean game that was released in 2011, bringing the movies to life in a way that the sets can’t. LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean would take a break after 2011, returning six years later.

2017 – The Silent Mary and a couple of BrickHeadz

71042

2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales gave the LEGO Group a reason to return to Pirates of the Caribbean, but the theme wasn’t returning with anywhere near as many products as 2011.

Instead, 2017 saw LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean expand with only 71042 Silent Mary and its suite of minifigures based on the new movie, as well as a pair of BrickHeadz to accompany them.

71042 Silent Mary offered a new LEGO pirate ship for fans to collect, but one that emphasised the wrecked and supernatural nature of this ship, down to the undead sharks using rare elements. There was and still isn’t a LEGO pirate ship model quite like it, and while this set signalled the end of the LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean theme, the partnership isn’t dead.

2025 – An updated Black Pearl and the first gift-with-purchase

Mid-September 2025 will see LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean return under the banner of LEGO Icons, bringing with it a new build of the Black Pearl, though it’s not named as such. The iconic ship is brought to life in the 2,862-piece set with eight minifigures, offering fans another chance to celebrate the Pirates of the Caribbean movies who missed out on the 2011 theme.

10365 Captain Jack Sparrow's Pirate Ship will launch alongside an exclusive gift, 5009609 Captain Jack Sparrow's Compass, which is also the partnership’s first set made specifically to be a gift-with-purchase.

You can pick up both for £299.99 / $379.99 / €349.99 starting from September 12 for LEGO Insiders, or September 15 widely. 5009609 Captain Jack Sparrow's Compass is only available while stocks last.
