Why LEGO The Nightmare Before Christmas minifigures lack masks

The LEGO Ideas team behind 21351 The Nightmare Before Christmas has revealed the reason behind Lock, Shock and Barrel’s maskless faces.

The LEGO Group recently revealed 21351 The Nightmare Before Christmas, a 2,193-piece build priced at £169.99 / $199.99 / €199.99. The upcoming LEGO Ideas model will launch exclusively for Insiders members on September 3, while everyone else can grab the spooky set from September 6.

In addition to new versions of Jack Skellington and Sally, plus Santa Claus, a Zero figure and a brick-built version of The Mayor, 21351 The Nightmare Before Christmas also comes with minifigures of Lock, Shock and Barrel.

However, one minor gripe regarding the upcoming LEGO Ideas set has been the lack of masks on any of the three characters, as seen in the original 1993 Tim Burton animated movie. In a recent roundtable interview with the LEGO Ideas team, the reason for not including the masked versions of the creepy kids in 21351 The Nightmare Before Christmas was explained.

“We can't make every element and we were really torn,” said LEGO Ideas creative lead, Jordan David Scott. “The [set’s] graphic designers, Chris and Georgie, are both massive fans, so we had a whole team of passionate people working on this.

They originally explored printing on the back of [Lock, Shock and Barrel’s] heads, but it looked horrifying because you just have the eye holes and then pupils. It looked demonic, in a way! It didn't translate at all, as we only have a certain printing surface on a minifigure head."

"It meant that their hair pieces didn't cover some of them," Jordan continued, "and it didn't look right. We spoke with Disney and opted to go for no mask printing and just do two expressions, so you can have their more mischievous face on one side and on the back they're kind of looking scared. Of course, masks would have been ideal in element form, but it was just a constraint that we had.”
