Maul series is ripe for a specific kind of LEGO Star Wars set

The first trailer for Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord is here, revealing animated scenes ripe for a specific type of LEGO Star Wars set.

Maul - Shadow Lord has received its first trailer and release date, coming one year after it was announced at Star Wars Celebration. The series will start with a two-episode premiere on April 6. It consists of 10 episodes, with two releasing each week until May 4. The series will explore what Maul did a year after the end of the Clone Wars, before his appearances in later animated series.

The trailer reveals that the series will utilise the existing animation style, set on a cityscape planet called Janix. The trailer is full of action-packed sequences, contrasted with beautiful backgrounds, making use of the futuristic skyline. It also only has four key characters, more than just Maul.

The Star Wars Databank confirms that Maul - Shadow Lord will feature a Twi'lek Padawan named Devon Izara, a police detective in the form of Captain Brander Lawson and his partner, the droid Two-Boots. That's a relatively small core roster of characters, which the LEGO Group would have an easier time realising in a set.

While the current roster of rumoured and confirmed LEGO Star Wars sets includes nothing for Maul - Shadow Lord, it's uncommon for a Disney+ series to go without a model of some kind. The trailer has plenty of moments that would suit a LEGO Star Wars model, and the location-based sequences would lend themselves well to a diorama specifically. The tone of the series skews towards an older audience, based on the trailer, too.

The last LEGO Star Wars diorama build was released in 2024, recreating location-based scenes from the original and prequel trilogies. Whether as part of that original, adult-aimed collection or not, Maul - Shadow Lord has plenty of potential for a new diorama model.

Something with Maul, simulated blaster fire, and the contrastingly blue skyline of Janix in the background is one of the first ideas that comes to mind. Even something akin to 2021's 75310 Duel on Mandalore, with an accordingly smaller budget covering just two of the four main characters, would be appropriate for the series.

Whether the LEGO Star Wars design team will turn their attention towards Maul - Shadow Lord is unknown at the time of writing. You can at least find a Darth Maul minifigure in 75411 Darth Maul Mech to build while you wait for the release of the series on April 6.
