LEGO's recolour experiment appears to be a success

LEGO Technic 42184 Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut White Hypercar isn't the first LEGO set to be a recolour but it does appear to mark a new confidence in the practice.

With the official reveal of 42184 Koenigsegg Jesko Absolute White Hypercar earlier this week, this marks what we think is the first time that two recolours of the same set have launched at the same time. 42184 Koenigsegg Jesko Absolute White Hypercar and 42173 Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut Grey Hypercar will both launch on August 1, bringing the exact some build onto shelves, just in different colours.

This marks a long history of recoloured sets. In LEGO Technic, we have 42162 Bugatti Bolide Agile Blue, and outside of the theme, there are 77942 Fiat 50031144 Exotic Pink Parrot, and more. Previously, however, those recoloured versions came out a while after the first iteration of the model, whereas 42184 Koenigsegg Jesko Absolute White Hypercar and 42173 Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut Grey Hypercar will be released at the same time.

That seems to suggest that the LEGO Group feels confident that both will sell. Where previous recolours might have been to reinvigorate interest in an older set, these upcoming releases offer a choice from the jump. The recolour experiment can be marked as a success, perhaps with more planned to be on the way. Seeing as both are at a mid-range price at £46.99 / $49.99 / €52.99, it's also feasible for one person to pick up both if you particularly like the Koenigsegg.

42173 Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut Grey Hypercar is available to pre-order now for £46.99 / $49.99 / €52.99, while 42184 Koenigsegg Jesko Absolute White Hypercar will be available to buy from August 1 for the same price.
