Making LEGO World Cup Trophy all drum-lacquered gold was not an option

LEGO Editions 43020 FIFA World Cup Official Trophy’s designer has revealed just why making the set an all drum-lacquered gold model drew a red card.

The LEGO Group will be kicking off its support of this year’s World Cup tournament with not one but two upcoming sports-based builds. Alongside next month’s release of 43019 Football is 43020 FIFA World Cup Official Trophy, with the model featuring the most number of gold-coloured pieces in a single set to date (between both pearl gold and drum-lacquered gold), although there's a good reason why it couldn't potentially have been much more of the latter.

In a new interview with Blocks, LEGO Editions designer Christophe Vietti has revealed exactly what went into constructing the 1:1 replica of the iconic award and discussed why going for an all drum-lacquered gold ultimately didn’t come to pass.

“One reason is that the golden elements are very expensive,” said Christophe, “so we had to balance it out. And if everything is shiny gold, it would be a nightmare to put together because everything is shiny. If you look at the spread of elements on the table, they’d just look exactly the same. We also wanted to enhance the two silhouettes. You can see that we have the silhouette that is all shiny gold and it goes a bit on the side, too. So you get more organic movement along the structure of the model.”

During the development of 43020 FIFA World Cup Official Trophy, the designer also turned to a LEGO Marvel set for inspiration, with 76191 Infinity Gauntlet proving to be a useful point of reference.

“The Infinity Gauntlet has a lot of gold and dark tan as well,” Christophe explained. “Dark tan complements gold quiet well, it kind of blends in. If you look closely, you can see some of that dark tan.”

The LEGO Editions designer goes on to hint at some new technology being employed in the creation of 43020 FIFA World Cup Official Trophy, used for the set’s accompanying minifigure-scale trophy.

“It’s something that is quite new,” teased Christophe, “and this is one of the first elements to be done with this technology of metallisation of the surface. It’s a different type of shine compared to other gold. I’m not an expert in that technology. Some engineers showed it to me and I knew we had to include it.”

43020 FIFA World Cup Official Trophy will launch on March 1, 2026, priced at £159.99 in the UK, $199.99 in the US and €179.99 in Europe, with pre-orders for the LEGO Editions set now live.
