LEGO Super Mario's new train is functional, but not in the way you'd expect

LEGO Super Mario sets have been unveiled for Mario Day including a new train that is functional, but not in the way you might be hoping.

The LEGO Group's Mario Day reveal video is now available showcasing three new sets that have since surfaced on the official online store, as well as announcing LEGO Mario Kart. One segment of this video focuses on 71437 The Bowser Express Train including two stations and a train inspired by Super Mario 3D World.

The kinetic features in the set are highlighted and images can't quite convey how they work. As the handcar at the back moves forward or backwards, either side of the mechanism moves up and down accordingly. As the engine moves forward, Boom Boom spins around as he does in the game and the steam moves up and down too.

It's an especially kinetic LEGO Super Mario model but keep in mind there's one thing it can't do without modification. Unlike 76423 Hogwarts Express & Hogsmeade Station and many other LEGO trains, the chassis of 71437 The Bowser Express Train is six studs wide, meaning the wheels are on the first and eighth studs respectively.

That's just too wide to fit on official LEGO train track pieces, though set is evidently not designed to fit on a standard track anyway. Most of the wheels used on the train do not fit on LEGO train track and as stated in the video, the floor is intended to be the track for 71437 The Bowser Express Train.

That's not a bad thing but it will be interesting to see just how long it is after launch until someone devises a modification for 71437 The Bowser Express Train to make it compatible with the standard track.
