Long-awaited and highly-demanded, the response to news of LEGO Super Mario minifigures arriving in 2027 has been surprisingly mixed from some fans.
A Nintendo-sized bombshell was dropped yesterday, with initial details of LEGO Super Mario minifigures coming to the video game theme in 2027. While that was something many had been clamouring for over the last decade plus, the response to the MAR10 Day announcement from the wider fan community has been a little divided.
“Love it. The head mould is perfect,” posted MR1120 on Reddit. “If I was nitpicking, I’d want either the medium legs (not the short, unarticulated legs), or dual-moulding for boots. Overall, this is fantastic, and I can't wait to see the rest.”

A similar response came from fellow Redditor TheDarKnight550, who said, “The head looks great, but I personally feel they could do a better job on the torso print. Could've added a front pocket to the overalls like in the movie to add a bit more detail. Torso looks pretty boring otherwise, but to be honest, that’s just how Mario's design is.”
“This is honestly pretty good, although I would have expected slightly better,” added Redditor NanoRex. “The main issue is that he needs more chin definition on the head mould to make his face look less fat. I think bigger eyes would have helped as well. The graphic design on the torso also leaves something to be desired in my opinion; there's too much blue.”
Minor visual tweaks aside, many fans seem to generally be glad to see the back of the blockier interactive LEGO Super Mario characters, although opting to go down a minifigure path isn’t a route that all want to see the theme take.

“NGL, I think the Zelda sets are a drop in quality and uniqueness compared to the Super Mario sets, so I'm sad to see Mario going in this direction TBH,” said Brad Winger on Facebook. “Not unless you guys keep doing your big unique sets at the same time??”
“I don't think it looks great, but I don't think they could do it better,” said Redditor nnnn0nnn13. “The LEGO minifigure is counterintuitively very good at representing more realistic design and is pretty bad at representing most cartoony designs.”
“LEGO Super Mario Character Pack series 1 -6 were actually pretty great,” said metamemeticist on Polygon, “especially as most of the diversity and creative design in Mario goes to the ever-expanding villain pool, and the change in scale to standard minifigure is far from opening up a ‘new world’ for the theme. Clearly, the new LEGO will need to taint the theme further with ‘SMART Play’ integration first.”
For now, passionate fans have a long wait ahead of themselves to find out exactly what the LEGO Super Mario theme may deliver in terms of potential minifigures and sets, with 2027 seeming like an eternity away at this point.
