The newest LEGO Star Wars Stormtrooper helmet isn’t so new anymore – and in 2026 it’s breaking a longstanding record for the Imperial army…
The LEGO Group has deployed five different Stormtrooper helmet designs since the Empire’s foot soldiers debuted in 2001’s 7146 TIE Fighter. The first four of those were largely variations on a theme, which is to say that they were all just increasingly detailed prints applied to the same basic mould. But in the late 2010s, the LEGO Star Wars team hopped on the dual-moulding bandwagon for possibly the most divisive helmet to date.
What’s ironic is that despite the polarising response to the current LEGO Star Wars Stormtrooper helmet, it’s actually now on the cusp of becoming the longest-running design of them all with 75425 Mos Eisley Cantina. The dual-moulded helmet returns for that SMART Play-compatible set’s Sandtrooper, and in doing so marks eight years in production. Here’s how that compares to previous helmet designs.

The original LEGO Star Wars Stormtrooper helmet is still the longest-running mould, with only minor changes made between 2001 and 2018 – the majority of the upgrades were in the printing – but the dual-moulded version wins out for the longest-serving consistent design. Save for the switch from black to white hips in 2022, any Stormies you add to your collection today will be pretty much identical to those from 2019.
That’s the sort of thing that should be music to the ears of army builders, because we’re long past the era of the LEGO Group switching up its designs every few years and rendering all older versions incompatible with current sets. But, of course, it’s tinged with the fact that the current Stormtrooper helmet available in 2026 is not to everyone’s tastes – so while you might have a consistent army, it doesn’t mean it’s consistently good.
What’s wrong with the current LEGO Star Wars Stormtrooper helmet?
Perhaps the most common criticism levied at the latest Stormtrooper helmet over the years is that it’s reminiscent of the Family Guy Stormtrooper design in its proportions and styling. Pop it next to any of the previous designs and you can see at once that it’s on the larger side. And those proportions introduce another problem: an all-too-limited range of motion.
You can just about get away with turning the helmet a couple of degrees to the left or right, but the larger chin that overhangs the torso obstructs any further movement to an even greater degree than the previous mould (which, it has to be said, didn’t exactly have the greatest articulation either).
But while those problems persist, there are benefits to dual-moulding these helmets too. The design is far more detailed than any before it, with more precise and finely-tuned shaping – particularly for the inset eyes – and better contrast between black and white, even on the helmet’s underside.
Will LEGO update the Stormtrooper helmet again?
It’s telling that this Stormtrooper helmet design is now the longest-running in LEGO Star Wars history, because that was never guaranteed. In 2018, the team swapped out the original style of rebel pilot helmets for dual-moulded versions in 75218 X-wing Starfighter, but the backlash from the community was so great that the theme almost immediately reverted to the classic approach with printed rather than moulded visors (for original trilogy sets at least).
That the same didn’t happen for the Stormtrooper helmet suggests the LEGO Star Wars team and Lucasfilm are content with both the design and its reception among the fanbase. And now we’ve seen it used for everything from Imperial Artillery Stormtroopers in The Mandalorian and Night Troopers in Ahsoka to Sandtroopers, Shadow Troopers and TIE Pilots, it’s also the most diversely-utilised of all the designs, too.
In short: it looks like this LEGO Stormtrooper helmet is here to stay, so if you haven’t hopped on board yet now is probably the time to accept the fate (and face) of your Imperial army.
