The LEGO Group’s reported new Star Wars licence agreement apparently still doesn’t include the option to produce Collectible Minifigures.
The blind-bagged characters have expanded their reach to encompass licensed properties like Looney Tunes, The Muppets and even Marvel in recent years, but there’s still no sign of a Collectible Minifigures series based on Star Wars. According to the LEGO Group, that’s thanks to the specifics behind the theme’s licence agreement.
Last year, LEGO Star Wars Design Manager Michael Lee Stockwell confirmed to Brick Fanatics that the existing contract with Disney and Lucasfilm forbids the LEGO Group from releasing individual minifigures. “We can include minifigures in our construction sets, because that’s part of the play experience, but we do not have a licence to develop action figures,” he explained.
The renewal of the Star Wars contract this year may or may not have provided an opportunity for the LEGO Group to renegotiate those particular terms, but according to The Holo-Brick Archives, it’s one it hasn’t exercised: the new contract, which will reportedly run through to 2032 and include all Disney properties, apparently hasn’t changed with regards to developing action figures.
That’s disappointing news for anyone still holding out hope for a LEGO Star Wars Collectible Minifigures series, but at least we’ve got another full decade of sets to look forward to.
The next series of Collectible Minifigures will be 71033 The Muppets, as rumoured for months and recently confirmed by the LEGO Group. Look out for those new characters to start appearing on shelves next month.
