A LEGO designer has revealed that an early build for the Star Wars Helmet Collection was made entirely of smooth pieces with no visible studs.
LEGO Star Wars designer Jens Kronvold Frederiksen was recently featured in an interview with the official Star Wars website to discuss a wide range of topics including how the design process differs between 18+ models and those aimed at kids.
As part of this discussion, other subjects were brought up including the incoming launch of 75313 AT-AT and how video games inspired it as well as how an early version of
"We had these flat-shaped elements that had a nice, flat surface, shared Jens Kronvold Frederiksen. "So we tried to build a helmet. I remember we had a Boba Fett helmet at that time, that was built to look authentic with these shaped elements. The feedback we heard was that people wanted it to look like LEGO sets and wondered where the LEGO studs were,"

"And then we tried to create it from standard LEGO elements with more visible studs, and that was exactly what people wanted. They want, when it’s displayed, it should be visible that this is something that consists of a lot of pieces. In other words, that it's a challenge to build it. But also it should distance itself from any other display piece by showing that it’s of the LEGO brand. So there was a lot of learning."

Rumoured to join the LEGO Star Wars Helmet Collection in 2022 are three sets, which could include a model based on the Dark Troopers seen in The Mandalorian.
