LEGO Star Wars offers 'a special opportunity' to experiment, says Lucasfilm exec

Lucasfilm executives say LEGO Star Wars offers 'a special opportunity' to experiment through titles like Rebuild the Galaxy.

Ahead of the second season of LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, StarWars.com has shared a look back over the history of LEGO Star Wars animated shows, with insight from Lucasfilm executives about the years of different series. For Lucasfilm’s Senior Vice President of Franchise Content and Strategy James Waugh, every LEGO Star Wars story maintains its identity through the ‘anything is possible’ messaging for kids, its unique sense of humour, and (of course) building with LEGO bricks.

However, the nature of the shows being loosely inspired by LEGO sets means that Lucasfilm can be a bit more creative with canon and timelines than is possible with the traditional movies and TV shows. Looking at how kids actually play with LEGO bricks is a vital part of the process of creating these animated shows.

“LEGO Star Wars has its own sense of humour, its own style, and creates a special opportunity to share something you love with your kids no matter the age,” Waugh said. “[For most films and series], we’re in our canonical sense of building stories, which delineates certain characters and vehicles set across different points of time.

"When I’m watching my son play with [LEGO bricks], and watching other kids play with them, that’s not the case. It’s more like, ‘I’m dumping all my LEGO Star Wars sets out, and I’m going to have the AT-AT fight battle droids from the prequels.’”

This chaotic energy is certainly apparent in Rebuild the Galaxy. We've got blended ships like the X-Fighter and the TIE-Wing, representative of how LEGO fans rebuild sets into new shapes. There are nods to LEGO Star Wars in-jokes and canon moments, like Jedi Bob in season 1 and sneak peeks of beloved minifigures, like Queen Amidala, coming up in season 2.

As Waugh pointed out, the creative nature of LEGO Star Wars allows for some wild exploration of characters and alternate timelines that wouldn't be possible within the regular Star Wars universe. The next instalment of this weird and wonderful brick-built galaxy available via Rebuild the Galaxy: Pieces of the Past is coming out on Disney+ on September 19.
