This summer’s rumoured X-wing Starfighter could offer up something genuinely different for the LEGO Star Wars theme in more ways than one…
Word on the virtual street is that the LEGO Group is gearing up to almost instantly replace its just-retired 75300 Imperial TIE Fighter and
The minifigure line-up for the rumoured LEGO Star Wars summer 2024 set is said to include an X-wing Pilot, TIE Pilot, astromech droid and two more mystery minifigures. There’s a fair chance that the X-wing Pilot is Luke Skywalker, or Red Five, who has been at the controls for pretty much every LEGO Star Wars original trilogy X-wing to date. But what if it’s not?
Hear us out: 75393 X-wing and TIE Fighter is thought to be dropping in August. Two months earlier, the LEGO Group is said to be launching its first follow-up to last year’s Star Wars mechs in 75390 X-wing Pilot Luke Mech. If you’re looking for Luke in his pilot fatigues, you’ll theoretically be able to grab that $15.99 set… which leaves the door wide open to an alternative pilot in the larger X-wing set.
We’ve seen additional pilots included in two previous X-wings, 2006’s 6212 X-wing Fighter and 2012’s 9493 X-wing Starfighter, which arrived with Wedge Antilles and Jek Porkins respectively (in addition to Luke Skywalker). The LEGO Group also included pieces to swap the wing markings of those ships to either Red Two or Red Six instead of Red Five.
There’s an opportunity for 75393 X-wing and TIE Fighter to break new ground for LEGO X-wings in two ways here, then – one of which is way more interesting than the other, and both of which require leaving Luke behind altogether. (But that’s okay! He’s got a mech!) The first is putting another member of Red Squadron at the controls, bringing back Wedge or Porkins or even bringing us an entirely new character. But that would still mean an X-wing with red wing markings.
If the LEGO Group really wants to push the boat out, it could instead turn to (for example) Blue Squadron, which also ran X-wings (as well as B-wings) in the Galactic Civil War. That would give us an entirely different take on the X-wing for 2024. And while Red Squadron’s X-wings are obviously the most iconic, and history tells us the LEGO Star Wars team prefers the mainstream version of this core vehicle, there is recent precedent for breaking the mould.

Ten years after the last minifigure-scale Republic Gunship, the LEGO Group moved away from the Clone Wars vehicle’s traditional colour scheme for something very different in 75354 Coruscant Guard Gunship. Could it be about to do the same thing with this summer’s rumoured LEGO Star Wars 75393 X-wing and TIE Fighter? The opportunity is there and waiting.
