LEGO Speed Champions could be planning for another Formula 1 addition

Looking ahead at the retirement dates for the LEGO Speed Champions Formula 1 wave, there's one outlier that has got us thinking.

The majority of the LEGO Speed Champions Formula 1 wave, releasing in March 2025, is set to retire at the end of 2027. That could still be subject to change; indeed, we've even seen some sets have their retirement dates change just a few weeks before the end of the year.

However, there's one set from the wave that currently appears to be retiring over a year earlier, with 77247 KICK Sauber F1 Team C44 Race Car retiring by March 31, 2026. Considering KICK Sauber won't be a Formula 1 team from the end of 2025, that's perhaps not a surprise – but it does leave the door open for a new set to join the theme.

KICK Sauber won't be technically leaving Formula 1, but instead be rebranding to Audi, with the German car manufacturer taking over a 100% stake in the team from 2026 onwards. The retirement of 77247 KICK Sauber F1 Team C44 Race Car aligns with the brand's departure but the March date is somewhat unusual, with most LEGO sets retiring in December or sometimes July.

March is the start of the Formula 1 season, however, and also the release date for the initial wave of LEGO Speed Champions Formula 1 sets in 2025. Could 77247 KICK Sauber F1 Team C44 Race Car be retiring to make room for an Audi Speed Champions set that fits in with the rest of the wave?

If so, this could be an exciting development for Formula 1 fans, with the potential to regularly swap out cars with significantly different liveries or when new teams join the sport. With news that Cadillac confirming plans to join Formula 1, powered by Ferrari engines, this could be happening once again over the next few years.

Of course, we're just speculating for now and retirement dates like the ones we're theorising about are always subject to change. Still, it feels like a reasonable guess to make, seeing as 77247 KICK Sauber F1 Team C44 Race Car is the only set from the wave to have a different retirement date. Only time will tell...
