The first demonstration of 10358 Soundwave’s sound brick feature has debuted in a LEGO Icons livestream, alongside more details on the set.
The LEGO Icons team took part in a Q&A livestream event today, showcasing the upcoming 10358 Soundwave, a 1,505-piece Transformers model that also just happens to be the first brick-built Decepticon released to date.
During the event (which can be rewatched here), LEGO Icons designers Elysha Zaide and Áron Gerencsé were quizzed by host Carl Merriam about various aspects of 10358 Soundwave, which included a demonstration of the set’s included battery-powered sound brick.

By pressing the stickered ‘Play’ button on the front of the LEGO Icons set, builders can activate a number of digitised sound effects, speech samples, music from the original Transformers cartoon show, LEGO-specific Easter eggs and something the designers referred to as ‘sound stories.’
According to the LEGO Icons design team, the sound brick in the Transformers set was programmed with ‘three times as much sound content’ as previous sets that have featured the piece, lining up phrases from original episodes of the TV show to replicate the character’s vocoder-style cadence.

That same programming then allows 10358 Soundwave to recombine phrases and sentences to create randomly-generated content that should offer plenty of non-repetitive deliveries – something that marks a first for a LEGO sound brick.
Interestingly, removing the sound brick from the back of the LEGO Icons set reveals that a number of smooth tiles have been used to replicate the look of the Decepticon’s face, a neat touch that Transformers fans will no doubt appreciate.

Those who want to customise their own minifigures with the prints can add Autobot and Decepticon logos to their torsos, images of the All-Spark and Soundwave in his cassette player mode, plus two different Transformers phrases.
