LEGO NINJAGO Legends: Monstrosity reveals tragic context of new set

One of LEGO NINJAGO's new display sets is more tragic than you would expect, following the reveal of the source material behind the build.

All three episodes of LEGO NINJAGO Legends: Monstrosity are available to watch on YouTube right now, showcasing the context behind both 71846 The Fire Knight Mech and 71847 The Guardian Dragon, and just like the series, one of the models has some surprisingly dark context.

This article will feature spoilers for the ending of LEGO NINJAGO Legends: Monstrosity, but the full series is only 15 minutes long if you want to catch up now.

71846 The Fire Knight Mech is the smallest of the two new Monstrosity sets, but it's by far the most accurate of the two, featuring the final monster the heroes need to vanquish in the series. The tentacled beast has Kai and the Guardian Dragon hypnotised and doomed, but the Fire Knight Mech jumps in to save the day, at the cost of their life.

This moment of sacrifice has been specifically depicted in the set. While the beast in 71846 The Fire Knight Mech is much smaller than in the series, there are too many similarities for them not to be the same creature, scaled down.

The mech's pose with his weapon pointed down into the monster is also akin to that of 71846 The Fire Knight Mech, just before the mech is forced to make the ultimate sacrifice, trapped in the creature's maw.

It's a surprisingly dark scene for a NINJAGO set to recreate, but it's important to note that the set isn't the same, since it includes another human character who doesn't exist throughout Monstrosity. The similarities may be coincidental, but either way, this set has some tragic context, intentional or not. It might explain why the model is intended for ages 14 and up.

The other LEGO NINJAGO Legends: Monstrosity set is the bigger 71847 The Guardian Dragon, depicting the same dragon from the series, which is accurate, above a shrine with a crystalline sword. The only crystal that the Guardian Dragon encounters is the offspring of a monster, and the dragon certainly isn't protecting it.

Aside from the dragon, the contents of 71847 The Guardian Dragon are much less accurate to the Monstrosity series, despite the fact that it makes up a fantastic NINJAGO display. Master Wu's inclusion is strange as well, considering the character only appears as an illusion, and would make more sense with this context in 71846 The Fire Knight Mech instead.

71846 The Fire Knight Mech and 71847 The Guardian Dragon are both out now, with the first three episodes of LEGO NINJAGO Legends: Monstrosity available to watch on YouTube.
