LEGO Minifigures Series 28 Animals draws inspiration from past critters

The designers behind the upcoming LEGO Minifigures 71051 Series 28 Animals have revealed how the collectible critters’ DNA links to the past.

LEGO Minifigures 71051 Series 28 Animals includes 12 different cute characters, each of which boasts their own distinctive fauna-based look. From a parrot, lion and goldfish to a cat, koala and monkey costumes, there’s likely to be a favourite animal outfit for just about everyone.

In a new video interview with Brick Fanatics at this year’s Fan Media Days, the designers behind 71051 Series 28 Animals talked about the conceptualization of the upcoming collectibles and some potential connections to LEGO critters of yesteryear.

“We were asked if there was some relationship with the frog [minifigure] to the tiny frog figure,” said Creative Lead Esa Petteri Nousianien. “Not directly, but of course the frog is a very iconic element in the LEGO element library. So in a way there is some relationship there.

“I think the design style of the crocodile has been present in LEGO animal libraries for quite a long time, so there is something there too, but other than that I’m not sure if there is anything that clear.”

Another 71051 Series 28 Animals minifigure that has a connection with LEGO sets of the past is its parrot, a character discussed by the Graphic Designer of the upcoming collectibles, Tore Magelund Harmark-Alexandersen.

“Some might note that the original parrot for the Pirates theme had a green [tail] tip,” noted Tore, “but we saw our set as the one with the blue tip and it also just looked better visually. So we always try and pay homage to the past, but not at the expense of the current design.”
