LEGO Minecraft's Micro World revamp is bursting with potential

LEGO Minecraft has successfully revamped the Micro World range that started the theme, and the whole collection is bursting with potential.

21589 Mini Biomes follows up on the retiring 21265 The Crafting Table by continuing the revamp of LEGO Minecraft's Micro World collection early next year. The latest revitalisation of the theme's original concept is packed with new techniques and ideas that prove just how much farther this collection can go. Note that this feature will discuss minor spoilers for 21280 Advent Calendar.

As 21265 The Crafting Table's retirement at the end of 2025 nears, 21589 Mini Biomes is ready to take its place, taking the Micro World range in a new direction by incorporating a swappable background to match the display value of 21265 The Crafting Table, but for a considerably lower cost. 21589 Mini Biomes costs £54.99/$59.99/€59.99 while 21265 The Crafting Table is £79.99 / $89.99 / €89.99.

The display surrounding the Micro World modules in each build differs greatly, with one consisting of an upscaled crafting table and sky, and the other featuring the sky and a simple black base.

The core modules at the heart of each set are similar enough to compare, though, and it's worth noting that 21589 Mini Biomes has five modules, as opposed to the four in 21265 The Crafting Table.

Despite these differences in quantity and display, the best part of both builds is that their modules are completely compatible with one another and depict a Minecraft world at the same scale. Take the modules out of their respective displays, and you can mix them to form a considerable world creation. Unfortunately, 21265 The Crafting Table will be retiring before 21589 Mini Biomes is available, given just how well these modules mix.

You can also combine the modules of both 21589 Mini Biomes and 21265 The Crafting Table with some of the contents in 21280 Advent Calendar, which is also due to retire at the end of 2025 alongside the other annual Advent calendars for this year. These builds can also be mixed with the original Micro World sets from the start of LEGO Minecraft, but there's a big difference between the collection's original creations and those of the recent revamp.

One look at the different builds in the village houses, and you'll notice that the original run of LEGO Minecraft's Micro World is at a much larger scale compared to the revamp. These modules can still be combined to form a giant Micro World, but the difference in scale is hard to miss. Despite the decade of differences, the models still look convincing when displayed together, but you can see just how far the collection has come since those original builds.

The addition of water and underwater areas in 21589 Mini Biomes is particularly game-changing, demonstrating that the LEGO Micro World modules have plenty of room to innovate even a decade later.

With only one of these Micro World sets due to be on shelves next year, it will be interesting to follow Micro World in the years to come to see how the designers innovate next. A return to alternate dimensions would be ideal following the original Nether Micro World set, especially considering that the 2025 Advent calendar includes a conspicuous portal.

For now, 21265 The Crafting Table and 21280 Advent Calendar are still available, with double points now available during the LEGO Insiders Weekend. 21589 Mini Biomes launches next year, but is available to pre-order during this latest double points event.
