LEGO Milky Way is beautiful – but is it art?

LEGO Milky Way is beautiful – but is it art?

LEGO Art 31212 Milky Way has just been revealed and it's got us having some rather lofty conversations about the true meaning of art.

LEGO Art as a theme has long since been a varied home for LEGO sets of all shapes and sizes, with the LEGO Group appearing to use it as a space to experiment with new building styles and techniques. Whether that's using a combination of studs, curved elements, and printed pieces in 21333 Vincent van Gogh - The Starry Night, or experimenting with subjects that literally climb out of the frame as in 31209 The Amazing Spider-Man, every new set brings something new to the table.

That doesn't change with the most recent reveal from LEGO Art: 31212 Milky Way. The mosaic-style recreation of our very own galaxy is constructed using a variety of elements, from hairbrushes to tiny flowers. All these small LEGO pieces come together to form a brick-built image of the Milky Way – but just how effective is it?

There's no denying that 31212 Milky Way looks good, both up close and from afar. However, Brick Fanatics' Matthew wonders whether a LEGO element, although small, is truly small enough to capture the majesty of the Milky Way. Indeed, it sparks a wider debate: has the LEGO Group's experimentation with different building techniques in LEGO Art always hit the mark?

Find out what Matthew thinks in his discussion of 31212 Milky Way and the wider theme as a whole in our latest video, embedded below. Be sure to leave your own opinions in the comments down below. After all, art is all about interpretation and there are no wrong answers. Let's discuss!

LEGO Art 31212 Milky Way is available from May 15 for LEGO Insiders and from May 18 for everyone else, retailing at £169.99 / $199.99 / €199.99.
