LEGO Super Mario 72037 Mario & Standard Kart could clearly be the start of a collection but in more ways than just the obvious.
72037 Mario & Standard Kart has only just been revealed but we (and everyone else on the internet) can already see the potential for a wider collection of brick-built characters from Super Mario. A Luigi to pair with his brother is the obvious next choice, but others like Toad and his Toad Kart, Donkey Kong and his Jumbo, and Peach in her own Standard Kart are also just waiting to be made.
Admittedly, with 72037 Mario & Standard Kart retailing for £149.99 / $169.99 / €169.99, if this does turn into a LEGO Mario Kart collection, it'll be a more expensive one to get involved in than the LEGO Star Wars Helmet Collection, for example. However, there's another – perhaps more interesting – route that the collection could take.
At 1,972 pieces, 72037 Mario & Standard Kart already packs in a lot of detail but there are some attachments that could take it to the next level, like a glider or a propeller. Choosing which ones you want to add to your kart is the first step of any Mario Kart experience, so it would make sense to translate this into LEGO building too.
As a theme, LEGO Super Mario has already proven that it leans towards interconnected sets. Just look at the LEGO Super Mario starter packs and then all the ensuing expansion ones. Could the theme's display sets also get expansion packs, bringing customisable attachments to the display-based models?

In a similar way to the LEGO Classic sets, you could buy a build for gliders with enough pieces to build a few potential glider options. These can then be added to the base model of 72037 Mario & Standard Kart to customise your kart, just like you're able to do in the video game. Being smaller than the larger display builds, it would make for a more affordable way to expand an 18+ LEGO Mario Kart set, without needing to fork out for several three-figure models.
Of course, that's all just speculation for now, but with a new Mario Kart game coming out this year and a lot of Nintendo fans looking for ways to spend their money, it could be a winning idea.
