LEGO Ideas' '80s challenge is allowing more franchises than expected

The new LEGO Ideas '80s challenge searching for the next IP-based set inspired by the decade is letting in more franchises than the rules suggest.

The rules of the LEGO Ideas '80s challenge specifically state that all contest entries must be based on intellectual property that is approved for the platform via the license checker and has not been covered in a previous or current LEGO set. The rules go on to specifically name TRON, Indiana Jones and Seinfeld though it was expected that this included the various sets released for LEGO Dimensions. Notably, that doesn't seem to be the case at least with 71258 E.T. Fun Pack.

The toys-to-life game featured plenty of '80s IP, namely including ET. Despite the rules, it would appear that LEGO Dimensions IP can get through the approval process as MasterMouldie has discovered. Their E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial poster model has been approved for the challenge and could be a future set, using the same E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial minifigure LEGO Dimensions debuted.

By this logic, the likes of The A-Team, Gremlins and Beetlejuice may be eligible too but take those with a pinch of salt in case your entry isn't approved – E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial may be a special case. Any franchises that have had a non-LEGO Dimensions model including Back to the Future and Ghostbusters will likely still be ineligible for the contest, especially as 10300 Back to the Future Time Machine is one of the prizes.

Still, this should come as good news to those who have yet to enter the challenge as it may provide you with more inspiration than initially expected. Our list of other IPs eligible for the challenge according to the rules is available to read here, all of which have been verified on the LEGO Ideas license checker.
