LEGO Minifigures 71051 Series 28 Animals went big on a fan-favourite concept, but does it just prove that you can have too much of a good thing?
The animal costume minifigures that have popped up in LEGO Collectible Minifigures series over the years have always been popular with collectors, carving out their own space and their own dedicated fanbase.
An entire series dedicated to animal costume minifigures should, then, be a slam dunk. However, it perhaps caters to too specific of a niche of enthuisiasts – and even they might have hit capacity on how many of a similar minifigure you might want.
Doubling down on franchises like Spider-Verse in 71050 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse still opens up a literal world (or multiverse) of possibilities. There is a wealth of characters to recreate. While there's obviously a ton of animals to potentially explore in 71051 Series 28 Animals, not all of them are as enticing as others.
While the peacock, fish, and frog offer some interesting parts and rich detail in rendering an animal as a minifigure costume, other animals in the most recent CMF series simply fall flat. There's not a ton of room in the torso and legs of the rabbit, cat, or monkey for creative prints, for example.
Where before animal costume minifigures would appear at most four times a year, being a neat novelty, we've now got a deluge of them that perhaps exposes some of the weaknesses of the line. With 12 new ones to collect all at once, is there really the appetite for a full set?
Of course, you don't actually need to pick up all 12, which is the beauty of them being sold individually for £3.49. Using Brick Search's minifigure scanner to avoid those you're not keen means you won't waste any cash on duplicates or unwanted minifigures.

There's certainly less of a need to army build specific characters, so making sure you don't double, triple, or otherwise stack multiple copies of the dolphin, while missing out on the more vibrant parrot, is reason enough to make sure you've got the app in your back pocket next time you go minifigure hunting.
