LEGO City space base sets have a knack for expansion

LEGO City's most recent space base sets have one rare feature in common, but the 2024 entry takes the function to the next level.

The reveal of 60439 Space Science Lab has confirmed that the upcoming LEGO City space set can attach to 60434 Space Base and Rocket Launchpad, with many of its design elements matching the larger model.

From the sliding door to the colour scheme, the two sets are an ideal match. They're not the first LEGO City space models to integrate this function though.

60350 Lunar Research Base is designed to expand via a similar system, attaching 60348 Lunar Roving Vehicle and allowing astronauts to board the rover without stepping foot outside. It doesn't increase the footprint of the base in quite the same way as 60439 Space Science Lab though.

It's interesting to see that the feature has returned in a similar LEGO City space set after two years, but there's a good reason for its return. Both 60439 Space Science Lab and 60434 Space Base and Rocket Launchpad use the new airlock element that is present across nearly all of the LEGO 2024 space models across multiple themes.

This piece means that 60434 Space Base and Rocket Launchpad can connect with much more than 60439 Space Science Lab, though it's designed to fit best with the City set. 60439 Space Science Lab is not yet listed on LEGO.com, though it's confirmed to launch on April 1, 2024.
