The LEGO Group is increasing their in-house game development efforts with multiple games currently in production over a multi-year journey.
As part of the 2024 financial results shared earlier today with record profits and best-selling themes, the promise of increased in-house games development has surfaced too as the LEGO Group seeks to build up their own games without needing to bring in external partners.
The LEGO Group has come a long way since they first partnered with TT Games for the many LEGO Star Wars titles, more recently pairing with other partners such as Studio Gobo and 2K Games for LEGO Horizon Adventures and LEGO 2K Drive, respectively. These partnerships may no longer be as much of a requirement for future LEGO games, thanks to some promising quotes from CEO Niels B. Christiansen.
“We can definitely say, as long as we’re under the LEGO brand, we can cover experiences for kids of all ages, digital or physical," said Christiansen, reports the Financial Times. "[In-house game development] is something we’re building up.
“We have made quite a few investments in the future – I’d almost rather overinvest. That’s the benefit of being family-owned and long term,” Christiansen added.

The likes of LEGO Fortnite and the recent LEGO games heavily suggest that the LEGO Group won't steer away from partnerships with external studios entirely, but more in-house LEGO games are in our future. The Guardian states that Christiansen said the new investment in digital was a “multi-year journey” and could not give details of the games now in development, suggesting that there are multiple titles on the way.
It will be worth keeping one eye on the LEGO gaming space in the future, especially with the success of game-based themes such as Super Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog, Fortnite, Horizon and Animal Crossing. Whether the likes of a NINJAGO roleplaying game, a LEGO City sandbox title or even a remake of LEGO Loco are on the horizon is currently unknown, though.
