LEGO Ideas Botanical Garden’s minifigures have their own stories

The 12 minifigures included in 21353 The Botanical Garden each has their own story, according to the design team behind the upcoming LEGO Ideas set.

The LEGO Group yesterday officially revealed full details for 21353 The Botanical Garden, a 3,792-piece LEGO Ideas set based on a submission by fan designer Valentina Bima. The upcoming model launches for Insiders on November 1 and on November 4 for everyone else, with a bonus GWP available from November 1 to 7, while stocks last.

Sat on two 32x32 baseplates, 21353 The Botanical Garden measures over 51cm wide, is packed with over 35 different species of plants and comes with multiple animals, plus 12 unique minifigures.

Speaking about the latter, the LEGO Ideas design team has revealed that there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to the visitors and staff that have been included in 21353 The Botanical Garden and that each has a specific tale to tell.

“We wanted to make sure that every character had a small storyline, which meant in most cases they were paired together,” said LEGO Ideas graphic designer Matt Parsons. “We’ve got a grandfather and granddaughter visiting the gardens together, and the granddaughter is taking the audio tour. We’ve also got a mother and son exploring the gardens, and the son has cheekily picked a flower for his mother.”

A closer look at the minifigure of the mother does in fact reveal that she has an expression on her face to suggest that plants in a botanical garden really aren’t meant to be plucked. 21353 The Botanical Garden also contains its own coffee shop, with the barista behind the counter serving drinks made from the beans of a coffee plant that can be spotted growing inside the building.

As with real botanical gardens, it was important to the LEGO Ideas team that 21353 The Botanical Garden wasn’t just about the sights of such a location, but that it also reflected its many sounds and smells, even in a brick-built form.

“There is one minifigure with a visual impairment,” explained Matt. “This was really important for us, and we talked a lot about how that character would experience The Botanical Garden.”

That particular minifigure can be spotted in the official promotional images released for the LEGO Ideas set enjoying a day out with a companion, as he explores the garden, experiencing nature in his own unique way.

LEGO Insiders will be able to get their hands on 21353 The Botanical Garden early on November 1, with a wider release for all on November 4. Those who purchase the LEGO Ideas set from November 1 to November 7 will also receive a free 5009005 Entrance Gate GWP, at least while stocks last.
