The limited edition £70 book accompanying the launch of the new LEGO Technic Ferrari sells out almost immediately, with early birds able to buy five copies.
Almost as anticipated as the new LEGO Technic 42143 Ferrari Daytona SP3 was the limited edition book that accompanies the set. At £69.99 / $79.99 / €79.99 there were questions – right up until the point at which it went on sale – as to whether LEGO Technic fans, or indeed Ferrari fans, would want to spend such a sizeable sum on a coffee table book.
That question was answered last night as the book, along with many new LEGO sets, went live on LEGO.com and was showing as sold out by 00.40 UK time. Given there were only 5,000 copies printed, some people were always going to be disappointed if the book proved popular, but eyebrows were raised when it became apparent that buyers could order up to five copies. Often, LEGO sets that are likely to be in high demand have a limit of three, sometimes even one, per customer.
The book, a collaboration between the LEGO Group and Ferrari, details the process by which the new Ultimate Car Series Technic set was developed alongside the actual car. It takes the reader behind the scenes, from initial prototyping, to development of new elements and on through to the painstaking work of creating the more than 1,000 steps in the instruction manuals.
Unsurprisingly, there are a raft of copies on Ebay today, and while prices vary, the market seems to have settled on £150 being a 'reasonable' asking price. The hardback book comes in a protective cover, which, under the title 'The Sense Of Perfection' has the subtitle, 'Limited Slipcase Edition', leading to speculation that a more affordable version, maybe in paperback, may follow at some point. Given that the LEGO Group probably wishes to preserve this as a halo product though, we wouldn't bank on it.
It's certainly a desirable item, particularly for those purchasing the set itself, and you can read our review here. In the book, Niels Henrik Horsted, Head of Product, LEGO Technic says: “With an Ultimate set, you don’t just get a big, detailed build; you get a complete package with insights from our own designers and from those on the partner’s side.” If future sets are to come with limited edition accessories, the LEGO Group may wish to make things a little fairer for fans by reducing the numbers that any one person can buy.
