Potential good news if you picked up a specific LEGO GWP in 2023, as 40580 Blacktron Cruiser might just be compatible with 10355 Blacktron Renegade.
The LEGO Group today revealed an upcoming blast from the past in the shape of 10355 Blacktron Renegade. The LEGO Icons set is a 1,151-piece recreation of two classic Space sets from the ‘80s, is priced at £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99 and will launch for Insiders members on January 1.
10355 Blacktron Renegade is a modern interpretation of 1988’s 6876 Alienator and 1987’s 6954 Renegade, updated to take advantage of current building techniques and elements. However, the LEGO Icons model still retains the modular nature of 6954 Renegade, which could well come in handy if you managed to pick up a specific GWP in 2023.

40580 Blacktron Cruiser was available for a limited period in that year as a promotional set and followed on the heels of another LEGO Classic Space revival from 2022, 10497 Galaxy Explorer. One of the key features of the LEGO GWP was its ability to be split up into three separate modular sections.
That same modular functionality is also included in 10355 Blacktron Renegade, with the option for builders to swap out six sections of the craft to reconfigure them and combine those parts in a number of different ways to make new vehicles.

From the images of 10355 Blacktron Renegade we’ve seen so far, it appears that the ship uses very similar clip pieces to attach its various sections together. That could suggest that there might be some sort of compatibility between the two models, but we won’t be able to confirm that until we get our hands on the upcoming LEGO Icons set.
If there is indeed a way of mixing and matching modules from 40580 Blacktron Cruiser with 10355 Blacktron Renegade, then the price of the LEGO GWP on the secondary market could well rise higher than its current average market value of £24.
10355 Blacktron Renegade will be released on January 1 exclusively for Insiders, while everyone else will get a shot at the LEGO Icons remake from January 4.
