Get around LEGO 71039 Marvel Series 2’s blind boxes by measuring their weights

For the truly dedicated, there’s a way to determine individual characters in LEGO 71039 Marvel Series 2’s blind boxes: measuring their weights.

The LEGO Group is moving away from its flexible foil packaging for Collectible Minifigures as of September, when 71039 Marvel Series 2 arrives on shelves in cardboard boxes. The new packaging is more environmentally friendly, which is good, but prevents fondling the packet to figure out which character is inside (a veritable pastime of LEGO minifigure collectors), which is bad.

It means that you’re well and truly gambling on which minifigure from the new Disney+ dozen you’re going to receive. Unless, that is, you have a set of scales handy. Instagram user 1414falconfan has published a list of weights (in grams) for each of the 12 different characters in 71039 Marvel Series 2, which may help you to identify individual minifigures before buying them.

A couple of caveats: these weights have come from Instagram user thelonesomebrick, who claims to have found the minifigures early at a Target store in Minnesota. Their reliability is therefore not guaranteed at this stage. And several of the characters seemingly have identical weights, so while your scale might say 18 grams (for example), you could still be holding any one of Mr. Knight, Hawkeye or Beast.

This should at least help you to narrow down to a specific pool of characters, though – and Agatha Harkness is the only character to weigh 22 grams, while Kate Bishop should also be fairly easy to identify at 21 grams. Check out the table below for the reported weights of all 12 characters in the new series.

Of course, this technique also requires a certain level of dedication to carry a scale with you to your local LEGO Store or third-party retailer. Although if you buy your minifigures from a supermarket, you could at least try taking them over to the fresh produce section’s scales…

71039 Marvel Series 2 launches at LEGO.com, in LEGO Stores and through all good retailers on September 1, 2023.
