LEGO Technic 42201 Deep-Sea Research Submarine review

Dive into our review of 42201 Deep-Sea Research Submarine to find out if the LEGO Technic set manages to make a satisfying splash.

Although the LEGO Technic theme tends to primarily focus on car, motorcycle or truck-related builds, every so often we’re presented with an altogether different kind of vehicle. Such recent releases for 2025 have included the likes of 42197 Backhoe Loader, 42198 Bush Plane and 42201 Deep-Sea Research Submarine, with the latter being a particularly impressive model for a number of reasons.

Deep dive

Inspired by various real-world submersibles (but no one specific vessel), 42201 Deep-Sea Research Submarine manages to combine both form with functionality, presenting builders with something wholly unique and long-overdue to add to their collection of brick-based craft. In fact the last time a LEGO Technic submarine surfaced was way back in 2017 in the shape of 42064 Ocean Explorer.

As is the norm with many such LEGO Technic builds, you can fully expect to give your pin-pushing thumb a good workout when it comes to assembling 42201 Deep-Sea Research Submarine. The vessel consists of a sturdy internal frame, on to which you'll attach the propellors, cockpit, extending arm and air tanks, many of which are more than just visual dressing.

The LEGO Technic set includes three primary functions, all of which can be activated by twisting various black cog pieces. Those features allow for the three propellors to be angled and spun in synchronisation, the extending arm to be folded up into the submersible, and for the arm’s claws to grab on to a brick-built barrel accessory or other small items.

All of that functionality does come at a cost though, with various fiddly mechanisms having to be constructed first and then tested out to ensure they actually work. During our build, 42201 Deep-Sea Research Submarine had to be taken apart at one stage, as the cog-operated propellors refused to spin, necessitating some backtracking and use of the LEGO Builder app to identify exactly what the problem was from a different angle.

Aquatic assembly

In total there are 13 stickers to be applied to 42201 Deep-Sea Research Submarine, which is acceptable enough, even if a few of them are a little tricky to place correctly. As usual, there are no minifigures included with the LEGO Technic set, but the transparent bubble cockpit does fully open to reveal a stickered seat and paint roller control handles.

Slight assembly issues out of the way, the rest of 42201 Deep-Sea Research Submarine comes together seamlessly, resulting in a finished aquatic model that certainly looks the part. Although not based on any particular licensed submersibles, the LEGO Technic set should definitely scratch an itch for those who have enjoyed watching James Cameron’s underwater documentaries.

The finished model presents itself as an impressive display piece, with plenty of sand blue and yellow elements, and it's one that can be placed in a number of positions. Those include the option to have the extending arm tucked up and out of the way under the vehicle or moved to the front of the craft, claws open or closed, and the three propellors can be angled for diving and surfacing.

Engineers and explorers

What we end up with then is an expertly designed LEGO Technic set that manages to be both a functional play build and an impressive display model. 42201 Deep-Sea Research Submarine should satisfy those interested in oceanic engineering and exploration, with plenty of attention paid to the look and features of the vessel.

The 413-piece set also has extra appeal for those who may be looking for something a little different from standard LEGO Technic fare, offering a building experience that doesn’t require any experience of land-bound, wheel-based vehicles whatsoever.

All in all, 42201 Deep-Sea Research Submarine ticks a multitude of boxes, making the LEGO Technic set one of the highlights of the recent line-up of 2025 releases. We’re keeping our flippers crossed for more such underwater models from the theme in the future, with the potential for a variety of similar builds as deep as the ocean.
