The LEGO Group almost delivers a perfect set with 40921 Up-Scaled Blue Astronaut Minifigure, if it wasn’t for a handful of strange omissions.
The LEGO Group continues its ongoing series of oversized characters in 2026, thanks to the upcoming arrival of a fan-favourite minifigure release. In hindsight, 40921 Up-Scaled Blue Astronaut Minifigure seems like such an obvious choice to receive the up-scaling procedure, yet while the set is sure to receive a very warm welcome at launch, the model isn’t without a few frustrating misfires.

The seventh up-scaled minifigure revealed to date follows in the recent oversized footsteps of last year’s 40820 Up-Scaled Santa Minifigure at what seems to have become the standard (and very reasonable) £54.99 / $59.99 / €59.99 price point for such models. Thankfully, the LEGO Group seems to have finally cottoned on to the fact that there’s definitely a market for more such embiggened creations, especially one based on the iconic LEGO Classic Space astronaut first seen in 1984.
Fortunately, 40921 Up-Scaled Blue Astronaut Minifigure sticks to the tried-and-tested assembly process of previous releases, with the brick-built character’s moveable legs constructed first, followed by its torso with poseable arms and hands, and then a helmeted head with printed face. The major addition with the latest up-scaled release is an enlarged set of LEGO Classic Space oxygen tanks to complete the look of the minifigure, which slot neatly into the back of the model and can be easily removed.
There are also some fun surprises to be had during the construction of 40921 Up-Scaled Blue Astronaut Minifigure, including many that longtime fans will really appreciate. Those include nods to previous LEGO Classic Space sets in the shape of blue, red and yellow elements making up the interior of the model, along with the theme’s iconic red, white and gold logo as a unique printed piece on the front of the oversized character’s torso (no stickers to be applied here, folks).
Those delightful building moments continue when assembling 40921 Up-Scaled Blue Astronaut Minifigure’s helmet. As per previous sets, the head of the giant character contains a miniature interior scene waiting to be discovered inside, revealed by removing the top of its helmet. This time it's one that depicts a LEGO Classic Space control room, complete with printed displays and room for the set’s included robot figure.
Speaking of which, 40921 Up-Scaled Blue Astronaut Minifigure’s robot character recreates similar mechanical creations from LEGO Classic Space releases of yesteryear, specifically those included in the likes of 6872 Lunar Patrol Craft, 6931 FX-Star Patroller, and 6952 Solar Power Transporter.
Which leads to the main issues that prevent 40921 Up-Scaled Blue Astronaut Minifigure from being a perfect LEGO set. For starters, the model was surely crying out for the inclusion of a classic blue astronaut minifigure instead, which hasn't been seen in a set (beyond Benny and his cracked helmet in The LEGO Movie) for decades.
A combination of both a classic blue astronaut and a robot would have seemed the obvious solution for 40921 Up-Scaled Blue Astronaut Minifigure, but alas, that was not to be. Having said that, neither 40819 Up-Scaled Racing Driver or 40820 Up-Scaled Santa Minifigure included their own minifigures, yet any potential future oversized characters really do deserve to come with their own mini versions going forward.

The only other area where 40921 Up-Scaled Blue Astronaut Minifigure falls a little short is comparing the finished build to the LEGO set’s official listing. The text description for the model on LEGO.com mentions ‘mini robots’ when there’s only one in the build and references ‘a rocket hidden inside its helmet’, which bafflingly seems to have vanished altogether.
Despite those minor niggles, 40921 Up-Scaled Blue Astronaut Minifigure is still a must-have set and one that should have been released alongside last year’s 40767 Up-Scaled Baby Astronaut as the perfect companion display piece. There’s no doubt that the latest enlarged minifigure has been a long time coming and highly anticipated. Now we just need more of the same, but in multiple colours, please.
Our honest opinion: 40921 Up-Scaled Blue Astronaut Minifigure is a thoroughly enjoyable and surprising build that will be an essential purchase for all LEGO Classic Space fans.
