Game Boy modder turns LEGO version into working handheld

An Australian Game Boy modder has managed to turn LEGO 72046 Game Boy into a working handheld console one day after release.

Starting from a jokey tweet, Game Boy modder Natalie the Nerd has actually turned 72046 Game Boy into a working handheld. It's not just a computer inside, but a system that can actually play retro games like Pokémon.

"I know from experience of routing Game Boy CPU PCBs that there isn't much to it," she wrote in the blog breaking down the process. "There's the RAM, CPU, some decoupling capacitors and power regulation."

Natalia began planning her build before the LEGO set was even out, using the dimensions included on the product listing to map out what she would need. Now that the set is out, Natalie could insert what she had into the brick-built handheld.

To help it actually work, she also connected up a USB-C power source, so you can charge up the electrical components within. While there's still some work to be done, according to Natalie, she plans to share the full project once she's made the refinements she's planning.

LEGO 72046 Game Boy is available to buy right now for £54.99 in the UK, $59.99 in the US, and from €59.99 in Europe.
