LEGO Icons 10330 McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna is a detailed recreation of the iconic racer, but how many of those does it get right?
The latest LEGO Icons set was revealed this week, with 10330 McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna due to race onto store shelves on March 1, 2024. The officially-licensed 693-piece build measures over 32cm in length, is priced at £69.99 / €79.99 / $79.99 and is available to pre-order right now.
10330 McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna not only recreates the iconic Formula 1 car in brick-built form for the first time, but also its legendary Brazilian driver. With expectations for the LEGO Icons set undoubtedly quite high, how many details does the upcoming vehicle-based model get right?
5 – Brand sponsorship
The world-famous 1988 racer was instantly recognisable thanks to its striking red and white paint colour scheme, as well as numerous brand-sponsored decals. Many of those have been recreated in 10330 McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna as either stickers or printed pieces, but thankfully there’s no Marlboro cigarette advertising on the LEGO Icons model.
4 – Slick tyres
Modern Formula 1 cars usually have wider rear tryes than those at the front, depending on driving conditions, as additional grip is required to keep the vehicles on the track at high speeds. However, 10330 McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna boasts four slick tyres, which work better on dry surfaces, although sadly there’s no classic Goodyear branding on them.
3 – Adjustable rear wing
The rear wing of the LEGO Icons Formula 1 car can be adjusted, allowing for that section of 10330 McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna to be moved in order to simulate various racing modes. The position of the wing on real-world racers provides strong downforce in order keep the vehicle firmly on the track.
2 – Turbocharged V6 engine
One of the reasons the McLaren MP4/4 was so successful was down to its powerful 1.5-litre Honda RA168E turbocharged V6 engine. Capable of putting out in excess of 700bhp, this section of the car has been faithfully recreated in brick form with plenty of detail and a selection of metallic pieces.
1 – Ayrton Senna minifigure
10330 McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna incudes the first-ever minifigure of the legendary driver, complete with printed red jumpsuit and yellow and green helmet. The colours of Senna’s iconic headgear were based on the traditional livery of his native Brazil and was originally designed in the 1970s when he was racing 100cc karts.
