The recent grand opening of the LEGO Group’s new Boston office hub was accompanied by a unique employee gift that pays homage to the US city.
The LEGO Group opened a new office at the Lyrik in Boston last month, with the company’s American Hub supporting its ongoing commitment into the US market. A planned team of over 800 employees are expected to work at the location, which spans more than 157,00 square feet across six floors.
To celebrate the LEGO Group’s arrival in ‘Beantown’, employees were gifted a special promotional set that tips its hat to one of the city’s more well-known and unusual modes of transportation.
5009181 Duck Boat is a 150-piece model delivered in the yellow window packaging that accompanies such builds. The set recreates a similar amphibious vehicle as those used by Boston Duck Tours, a local company that offers unique sightseeing of the popular US location, but isn't a licensed model.
As well as a white roof, yellow body and black lower hull with six wheels, 5009181 Duck Boat also features its own display base, with a selection of blue pieces representing water, plus what may be a stickered name plaque.
The latter states ‘Welcome to Boston’ and ‘1001 Boylston Street’, a reference to the address of the LEGO Group’s new state-of the-art office facility found in the city’s Back Bay. As is usually the norm for such promotional sets, few copies of 5009181 Duck Boat are likely to escape into the wild and those that do may well cost collectors a pretty penny on the secondary market.
The Boston Hub marks the LEGO Group’s most recent push into the US, with plans already in place to open a factory and regional distribution centre in Virginia in 2027, one that is set to employ around 2,000 people.
