There are big differences between the LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 sets

The latest massive buildable LEGO Star Wars R2-D2 set has a few major differences compared to the last two versions, beyond its smaller size.

Recently revealed by Amazon Mexico, 75379 R2-D2 is far from the first depiction of the droid not at minifigure-scale. While it may seem similar by its concept alone, it's full of differences to set it apart from the rest of the range, including some sacrifices.

It's worth comparing the three models to see exactly what's changed. Since 10225 R2-D2 and 75308 R2-D2 are so similar, we'll only be comparing the new set against 75308 R2-D2 and not mentioning the exclusive Darth Malak minifigure as he's a 25th-anniversary inclusion. The most obvious difference between the models is their sizes as the 2024 set appears to be around half the size of the other two models, matching the fact that it has less than half the elements of 75308 R2-D2. The price is rumoured to be less than half the price too at $99.99 / €99.99.

The size reduction has come with a few sacrifices as many of the builds' original features – while they appear to be present – have been drastically changed. Both 10225 R2-D2 and 75308 R2-D2 include retractable equipment and a third leg that can all be stored inside the main body when not in use.

That's not quite the case in 75379 R2-D2. While the 2024 droid model still includes the equipment, they have to be detached from the rest of the build and likely stored separately. Considering the rumoured change in price, it's a worthwhile sacrifice. The other major difference between 75308 R2-D2 and 75379 R2-D2 concerns the display plaque.

75379 R2-D2 still includes an Ultimate Collector Series-style informative plaque but lifestyle and product images reveal that the design is now printed instead of being a sticker. It seems that the change that was introduced with 75371 Chewbacca is sticking around.

The plaque has one other difference, though it makes a lot of sense. The special printed piece debuted for the 50th anniversary of Lucasfilm remains exclusive to 75308 R2-D2. Since we're long past the anniversary it's understandably not included in 75379 R2-D2 and is unlikely to be missed, again considering the rumoured price.

75379 R2-D2 is rumoured to cost $99.99 / €99.99 with 1,050 pieces and launch on March 1, 2024, but all of these details apart from the piece count have yet to be confirmed. You can find out more about the model and take a look at more images by clicking here.
