Comparing all 10 teams across the LEGO City Formula 1 cars

The LEGO City Formula 1 sets visit all 10 teams that appeared on the 2024 grid – but how does each brick-built race car compare?

There are several ways to get all 10 Formula 1 teams in LEGO sets – and several scales to boot. The smallest is about to debut on May 1, with 71049 Collectible F1 Race Cars, while the largest complete set of 10 can be found in LEGO Speed Champions. Right in the middle sits LEGO City, bringing the icons of motorsport to life at a larger play-sized scale than the collectibles, but not quite at the same level of detail as LEGO Speed Champions.

We've already rounded up all of those cars for review, but now it's time to put them head to head in a direct comparison.

Race cars for the youngest Formula 1 fans

The two cars that stick out from the rest are undoubtedly the Williams and Haas vehicles, built at a smaller scale to match the 4+ age tag of their set, 60464 F1 Williams Racing & Haas F1 Race Cars. You can quite clearly see in the picture below that the cars have a different size and silhouette to their larger siblings, meaning the driver is also in a different position while seated.

There's also no halo – the curved piece that, in a real race car, would protect the driver's head in the event of a crash – in the smaller cars, with far fewer pieces to make up the front and sides of the car. Nonetheless, all the same features are there, with front and rear wings, complete with team branding.

A stripped-back style leaves space for team pride

Speaking of team branding, while the LEGO City Formula 1 cars include less detail than the LEGO Speed Champions range, there are still plenty of signifiers for which team is which. The majority of the cars have the team logo emblazoned on the front or rear wing, along with more team-appropriate elements along the sides.

The colour schemes are all easily distinct enough to know what team you're looking at, all the way down to different coloured wheel rims. There's even enough distinct branding between the Aston Martin and Sauber cars, which come in unrealistically close shades of green. Sauber has plenty of black features to highlight the KICK branding, while Aston Martin has yellow stripes and a classy 'Aston Martin' rear wing to help it stand out.

An absence of bulls

When looking at all the LEGO City Formula 1 cars, you might notice that a couple of the cars have slightly less specific team logos than the rest. Red Bull and VCARB are both missing their signature racing bulls, perhaps due to the fact that Red Bull is a mature brand, thanks to its energy drink fare.

Looking at the picture above, McLaren sports its signature 'speedmark' logo on the front, while Ferrari has its prancing horse. Both feature the team names on the rear wing as well – while Red Bull, by comparison, has none of that. You can still tell what team it is thanks to the red, yellow, and navy pieces but it does feel marginally less distinctive.

A fitting collection

All in all, however, the cars do work well together as one complete set, or if you just take them as is. While all 10 aren't quite a seamless set, thanks to the miniature 4+ cars for Williams and Haas, each team has still been fairly represented. The cartoonish, play-oriented style works impressively well, without losing any of the icons that make the teams recognisably themselves.
