See how LEGO Speed Champions 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future compares to 2013's 21103 The DeLorean Time Machine.
LEGO Speed Champions is set to welcome 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future in 2026, but it's not the first time that the iconic vehicle has been rendered at a similar scale. While the LEGO Icons version, 10300 Back to the Future Time Machine, is far larger at 1,872 pieces, 2013's 21103 The DeLorean Time Machine is closer to Speed Champions scale at 401 pieces.
Designed as part of LEGO CUUSOO (a precursor to LEGO Ideas), 21103 The DeLorean Time Machine includes many of the same features as 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future, such as opening gull-wing doors, fold-up wheels, flux capacitor, time travel display and two license plates.
However, while it may be similar on paper, the execution is far different. The final look of the LEGO Speed Champions set is smoother and more polished, an example of what can be achieved with modern building techniques.
Switching between the flying and regular car isn't as seamless in the 2026 release. Where 21103 The DeLorean Time Machine didn't need to be rebuilt to include the rotated wheels, 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future does, offering two different versions of the set that can't be switched between as easily.
The windscreen and windows are also closed off in the LEGO Speed Champions build, while they're left open in the CUUSOO version. That's also likely a result of new elements that have come about in the last 12 years. The end result is, despite 77256 being smaller than 21103, it has a smoother final look that's closer to the on-screen appearance.
Looking at the minifigures, the focus is predictably the same: Marty McFly and Doc Brown. While the outfits are much the same, the modern version features a puffy vest accessory for Marty, adding extra depth to his design than the printed torso could offer.
When it comes to Doc, the printing and hair piece feel more animated in the CUUSOO minifigure. Something about the increased lines and flatter hair feels a tad bland in the LEGO Speed Champions version – although the difference is slight enough that we doubt you'll be disappointed if you pick up 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future.
LEGO Speed Champions 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future is available to pre-order now for £22.99 / $27.99 / €27.99 ahead of its release on January 1, 2026.
