Common, rare and one-offs: breaking down 25 years of LEGO Star Wars minifigures

Over nearly 1,000 LEGO Star Wars sets over 25 years, the classic theme has had many minifigures from the common to the rare and the even rarer.

Across 25 years of LEGO Star Wars minifigures, there have been thousands of minifigures with hundreds of variants to collect. There's a reason why Star Wars remains one of the LEGO Group's biggest themes year after year. It's hard to believe that at least some part of this success is not down to the minifigures.

Representing iconic science fiction characters in a small, collectable form was always going to be a recipe for success but looking at the grander scope of the theme's minifigures, it's hard to believe how far we've come over 25 years.

Some of the most common minifigures – by set appearances – in LEGO Star Wars aren't all that surprising. We've poured through the data and picked out the most common LEGO Star Wars minifigures, not including any major variants with drastically different pieces or additional elements that would classify them as a different character or form of that character. We also excluded seasonal variants as their effect on the list would have been minimal.

The most common LEGO Star Wars minifigures

Leading the charge, surprisingly over Stormtroopers, are Battle Droids in a whopping 54 sets. Note that this is only the tan-coloured Battle Droid, excluding the dark orange Geonosian variants. After that, it's not as surprising to see that the 2014 R2-D2 minifigure is next with 30 appearances.

Other notable inclusions in the list are Din Djarin and BB-8 based on newer projects in Star Wars that have managed to garner an impressive number of minifigures in their relatively short time on shelves, at least compared to the rest of the list.

You might have expected Darth Vader and Han Solo to make the list too, but while they have a great many minifigures, some of these are significantly different enough to consider them as different variants. They would be best saved for a list of the most common characters in LEGO Star Wars, where they would be much more successful.

Aside from those, the list of most common LEGO Star Wars minifigures is about what you would expect, primarily occupied by characters from the original trilogy. Just as there are common minifigures, there must be some considerably rarer minifigures across two and a half decades of the theme. For this section of our report, we'll only be focusing on minifigures that have been widely available in LEGO sets, including gifts-with-purchase.

Nailing down the rarest LEGO Star Wars minifigures – even with these guidelines – isn't quite as easy as that of the common minifigures. Some of the rarest can be found in gifts-with-purchase, which were only offered for a limited time under special circumstances. Of these, Darth Revan from 5002123 Darth Revan and Aunt Beru from 40531 Lars Family Homestead Kitchen are both rare minifigures of characters that have only been depicted once and are unlikely to appear as minifigures again. Their popularity has made them expensive on the secondary market too.

Admittedly, the increased presence of Knights of the Old Republic in LEGO Star Wars for the 25th anniversary via 75379 R2-D2 has somewhat increased the chances of Darth Revan reappearing, but it's still unlikely. Speaking of one-off minifigures, LEGO Star Wars has accrued many of them over the past 25 years.

The constant expansion of Star Wars in various forms means tie-in LEGO sets for all kinds of projects. As well as original LEGO content such as Rebuild the Galaxy – which brought back Jedi Bob – there's everything from movies to board games – many of which have inspired sets.

In terms of one-off minifigures based on these projects, we'd specifically name Rako Hardeen from 75024 HH-87 Starhopper, the pilots from 75204 Sandspeeder and Rotta from 7680 The Twilight as minifigures and characters that we probably won't see in LEGO Star Wars again, based on specific projects that probably won't be revisited. The crew from Solo: A Star Wars Story may well be on that list too.

LEGO Star Wars has a range of minifigures for the 25th anniversary that have been picked to select characters that are similarly unlikely to appear again as minifigures and we've taken a closer look at them all here.

These are just a handful of the dozens of one-off LEGO Star Wars minifigures and the likes of 75374 The Onyx Cinder's cast may be joining that list eventually too. That is unless the series proves to be a similar success to The Mandalorian, which is now home to one of the most common Star Wars minifigures.

With common and rare minifigures combined, there's no doubt that LEGO Star Wars is one of the biggest themes from across the LEGO Group's lengthy history and you can click here to continue celebrating the range's 25th anniversary.
