Rumours that the LEGO Group is producing a new castle for its 90th anniversary have drawn dismayed reactions from some BIONICLE fans.
Over the last few days, rumours have been swirling that the LEGO Group will honour the Castle theme with a new set later this year. The rumoured RRP of €349.99 suggests such a model will be considerably more ambitious than the castles that have preceded it.

A Castle set makes sense for such a celebration: Castle sets were amongst the first LEGO sets to delve into more exotic and unusual subject matter. The theme enjoyed several releases throughout LEGO history, although interest in the theme seems to have dribbled away amongst the majority of LEGO fans.
However, large castles are very popular amongst older LEGO fans, frequently appearing on websites like LEGO Ideas. The recent release of 31120 Medieval Castle (pictured above) also suggests there's a market for such a set.
The choice of a 90th anniversary set has been decided (or at least influenced) by a fan vote conducted last year. The original vote pushed dormant theme BIONICLE to the top of the list, with other favourites like Pirates and Classic Space joining it. The second round of the fan vote, however, added Castle to the mix to reflect the wide popularity of various Castle subthemes in the previous voting stage.
Between the fan vote and these new rumours, it seems likely BIONICLE is out of the running – a particularly bitter pill, considering the Castle theme has recently enjoyed new LEGO sets. Some of our Twitter followers have expressed their disappointment with the rumours.
We still haven't gotten confirmation either way on what a 90th anniversary LEGO set would look like. But given the resurgent popularity of the theme, and BIONICLE's highly specialised parts selection, we feel we know which way the wind is blowing on this one.
