The biggest LEGO train sets ever designed – November 2023

While 21344 The Orient Express Train is the latest LEGO train it's not quite the biggest, already climbing the ranks of the largest LEGO trains.

LEGO Ideas 21344 The Orient Express Train has been officially revealed, giving us an idea of what to expect from the 2,540-piece set when it launches on December 1. Unsurprisingly, it's not the first LEGO train and it isn't quite the biggest either, by its piece count, though it is near the top of the list.

Here are the six biggest LEGO train sets ever released, not including BrickLink Designer Program models or similarly fan-designed sets (with the exception of LEGO Ideas) and sets where a train isn't the main focus, in order of piece count ascending.

10 – 76423 Hogwarts Express & Hogsmeade Station

Price: £114.99 / $129.99 / €129.99 Pieces: 1,074 Release date: June 1, 2023

LEGO Harry Potter has a couple of places on this list with the most recent Hogwarts Express sitting at just over 1,000 pieces. 76423 Hogwarts Express & Hogsmeade Station devotes much of its piece count to the station and the short length of track included but the Hogwarts Express is undoubtedly the focus with two carriages, the train and a tender.

9 – 10194 Emerald Night

Price: £69.99 / $99.99 / €89.99 Pieces: 1,074 Release date: April 1, 2009

LEGO 10194 Emerald Night remains one of the most iconic brick-built trains of all time, though its design has admittedly become dated especially compared to 21344 The Orient Express Train. However, it is still a stunning model with one carriage, the engine and a tender, though not that many passengers to ride on the Emerald Night.

8 – 60336 Freight Train

Price: £159.99 / $199.99 / €179.99 Pieces: 1,153 Release date: June 1, 2022

One of the most modern entries in the array of large LEGO train is 60336 Freight Train at 1,153 pieces. While it includes a full loop of track with a siding as well as a reach stacker, the freight train takes up most of the piece count with electronic elements integrated into it, but it's not the largest LEGO train to be motorised.

7 – 60198 Cargo Train

Price: £169.99 / $229.99 / €189.99 Pieces: 1,226 Release date: July 1, 2018

60198 Cargo Train's contents are some of the most varied of any LEGO train set with much of its parts not being used for the train. However, the full loop of track helps this model earn a place on the list.

6 – 10219 Maersk Train

Price: £91.99 / $119.99 / €119.99 Pieces: 1,234 Release date: April 1, 2011

One of a few LEGO Maersk products, 10219 Maersk Train is another huge electric train focused specifically on cargo. While some of its piece count goes towards a truck and the crates, the majority is put towards the train itself.

5 – 10277 Crocodile Locomotive

Price: £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99 Pieces: 1,271 Release date: July 1, 2020

The first of the modern adult-focused LEGO train sets – 10277 Crocodile Locomotive – is now retired but is a unique model in the history of LEGO trains for its recognisable design and one of the first appearances of a brick-built track display base.

4 – 10233 Horizon Express

Price: £79.99 / $129.99 / €99.99 Pieces: 1,351 Release date: January 1, 2013

10233 Horizon Express is the biggest LEGO electric train (but does not include electronic pieces as standard) ever designed and is the last set on this list to come in under 2,000 elements. This lengthy model was intended to be expanded with a second copy of the set for an ultra-long train.

3 – 21344 The Orient Express Train

Price: £259.99 / $299.99 / €299.99 Pieces: 2,540 Release date: December 1, 2023

Launching on December 1, 2023, 21344 The Orient Express Train is the third-biggest LEGO train and is inspired by the design originally submitted by Thomas Lajon on LEGO Ideas. Featuring two carriages, a tender and the locomotive recreating the iconic train, 21344 The Orient Express Train is the newest model on the list.

2 – 71044 Disney Train and Station

Price: £299.99 / $329.99 / €329.99 Pieces: 2,925 Release date: September 1, 2019

Based on the train that circles Disneyland Park at the Anaheim resort, 71044 Disney Train and Station is also retired but is the biggest LEGO train set to feature motorisation via the Powered Up system. The train is a focus of the model and a full loop is included but much of the piece count admittedly goes towards the station and its interior details.

1 – 76405 Hogwarts Express – Collectors' Edition

Price: £429.99 / $499.99 / €499.99 Pieces: 5,129 Release date: August 31, 2022

76405 Hogwarts Express Collectors' Edition is the biggest LEGO train set ever designed and is one of the only larger LEGO train models to not be compatible with the standard track system. It's just too wide for the standard track but comes with a hefty display base complete with track, one carriage, one giant tender, the train itself and a portion of a certain iconic platform from the Wizarding World. It tops the list with 5,129 pieces.
